Wonderful
toy robots, space ships, astronauts, and comic
characters produced by the Louis Marx Company
from the 1950s to the 1970s are described and
shown in color and black and white photographs
in Marx Toys: Robots, Space, Comic, Disney
& TV Characters. Prices are included among
the descriptions. The focus of this book features
a super popular collecting area in general of
robots and space toys and those of the Walt
Disney Company and other TV characters of the
mid 20th century. While founded in 1919, Marx
production was interrupted by the World Wars,
but after World War II they returned to toy
manufacturing and achieved a dominant position
in the U. S. market during the 1950s and 1960s.
Friction-based trains, fire engines, and cars
were introduced in 1948, and the Marx plant
in Girard, PA first produced the famous Marx
trains while automobiles and other vehicles
were first produced at a new factory in Glendale,
West Virginia. In 1955, electric trains and
automobiles were introduced, and later that
year Louis Marx appeared on the December, 1955
cover of Time Magazine with the moniker "The
Toy King!" As an early adopter of overseas manufacturing,
Marx had established factories in 10 countries
by 1964 and licensed others for export. The
toys covered in thsi book were produced in tin
or plastic and include wind-ups, battery powered
toys, hoppers, and ramp walkers which light
up, make noises, or scramble erratically around
the room. Interviews with artists employed by
the company add detail to this valuable text,
an essential reference for anyone fascinated
by toys. Author Maxine A. Pinksy from Philadelphia,
PA has studied, collected and written other
books on Marx toys and has a winner here in
a red hot collecting area.
