Fantastic
pair of period Erphila German bookends of
a great nautical theme. One seaman tugs
at a rope straining against the weight,
and the other pushes a barrel perhaps filled
with whisky for the voyage. These are hollow
and meant to be filled with sand or some
other substance to provide weighting. Each
stands approximately 6" high, 5.25" long,
and 3" deep. Fantastic coloring on both
pieces...the blues, burnt orange, grays,
and creams really go together. While most
Erphila is Czech, these are the much harder
to find German production. The Erphila mark
was used on porcelain imported by Eberling
& Reuss of Philadelphia, PA. The fellow
with the rope has the tiniest glaze chip
(not really a chip) at his elbow, and the
barrel fellow has three of the same type
of areas of missing glaze (but again not
really a chip per se). It looks like just
a bit of surface glaze came off in these
areas as they really don't penetrate the
figure beyond the surface. /85 |
