Very hard to find set of advertising trade cards c 1880s with super color lithography and a theme. This set of 4 promotes baking powder and vinegar brands. 1. Whimsical Alden Vinegar advertising card beautifully lithographed and featuring a jolly, heavyset delivery man bringing the vinegar with the caption "Oh I Fetch Him All Right- Sure." (4.25" x 2.5"). 2. Very large advertising card Use The Alden Fruit Vinegar advertising card with super lithograph of young girl holding a basket of fruit gracing the card. (6.0" x 3.75"). 3. Use Crystal Baking Powder features a shimmering red lithographed forest scene with the moon in the background. ( 4.0" x 2.75") 4. Arm & Hammer Baking Soda features two lithographed birds - canaries - on the front and some interesting text promoting this new series of bird lithos on their advertising trade cards along with the many reasons why someone should use packaged Arm & Hammer baking soda. Arm & Hammer logo is on the front of the card in lower right corner. (2.75" x 1.75"). Louis Prang, a lithographer and printer, develops the idea of mass-producing small "trade cards" that could be adapted to the needs of individual advertisers at low cost in the 1870's. Illustrated trade cards reach the height of their popularity in the 1880s, not only with advertisers but also with the American public which becomes very interested in collecting them. All cards are in very good condition with near mint color lithographed images and only de minimus age wear on the rear. All 4 of these cards except the Arrm & Hammer card have the name of the lithographer printed in the lower right corner.
