Very
hard to find set of advertising trade cards
c 1880s with super color lithography and
a theme. This set of 4 is particularly rare
and features 2 advertising cards for manufacturers
of the trade cards themselves and 2 advertising
cards for early medicinal potions and alleged
cures. 1. Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills
from W. H. Comstock, Sole Proprietor in
Morristown, NY with the back denouncing
many medicines as "humbugs" and
that they have "thousands of certificates
on our files of the cures they have effected
(many of them wonderful) and will verify."
(4.25" x 2.75") 2. Sapanule, The
Glycerine Lotion, cures "rheumatism,
neuralgia, pneumonia, diphtheria, sore throat,
inflammation of the lungs & kidneys."
(3.75" x 2.5") 3. Super whimsical
card for W. M. Keith American and Imported
Advertising Cards on Elm Street in Brockton
(4.0" x 2.75"). 4. Luther C. Hall,
Dealer in Plain, Fancy, and Advertising
Cards and featuring a colorful lithographed
peacock feather (4.0" x 2.5").
Louis Prang, a lithographer and printer,
develops the idea of mass-producing small
"trade cards" that could be adapted to the
needs of individual advertisers at low cost
in the 1870's. Illustrated trade cards reach
the height of their popularity in the 1880s,
not only with advertisers but also with
the American public which becomes very interested
in collecting them. All cards are in very
good condition with near mint color lithographed
images and only de minimus age wear on the
rear. These early advertising cards easily
go for $12 or more each, so enjoy the bargain
pricing only at Collectics, part of a major
estate collection and consignment of the
finest advertising memorabilia and collectibles. |
