Very
hard to find set of advertising trade cards
c 1880s with super color lithography and
a theme. This set of 3 is particularly fun
and whimsical and features lithographs and
marketing slogans of early soap products.
1. Super advertising card for Soapine, The
Dirt Killer made by Kendall Mfg. Co. established
in 1827 in Providence RI features a giant
whale washed up on the beach with "Soapine
Did It" on his side and some fun legends
on the back describing the wondrous merits
of the product noting that "It will
be used in every house as soon as its merits
are known as it relieves the drudgery of
washing and scrubbing." (4.5"
x 2.75") 2. Ask Your Grocer For Linen
Soap (4.75" x 2.5") 3. Curtis
Davis & Co., Boston MA - a soap dealer
(4.25" x 2.5"). Louis Prang, a
lithographer and printer, develops the idea
of mass-producing small "trade cards" that
could be adapted to the needs of individual
advertisers at low cost in the 1870's. Illustrated
trade cards reach the height of their popularity
in the 1880s, not only with advertisers
but also with the American public which
becomes very interested in collecting them.
All cards are in very good condition with
near mint color lithographed images and
only de minimus age wear on the rear. These
early advertising cards easily go for $12
or more each, so enjoy the bargain pricing
only at Collectics, part of a major estate
collection and consignment of the finest
advertising memorabilia and collectibles.
